Am I a Traitor??

I have just this very minute finished and sent off an online application. This has taken me a considerable amount of time. But why would this be traitorous?

Because fellow Bar aspirants, it is for the summer vacation scheme at Linklaters! Now yes it would be very good work experience, and it is fairly nicely re numerated, but am I betraying my quest?

I shall leave it for you to decide, although let us not forget that this scheme is exceptionally competitive so no guarantees I'll even get on it, so the worrying could all be for naught.

Till next time, BoB.

*Faints* EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! How COULD you!?!?!?
Naw, BoB, you aren't betraying your quest; having experience at Linklaters, especially if its in their commercial department, will do you considerable good, and would be a worthy addition to your CV. Demonstrating commercial awareness at a commercial chambers, obtained through high profile firms, will most definately give you an edge!!

Ah the voice of reason again. What would I do without it. Hope the thesis is going well.

Or even naught?

Have you considered who you're actually 'betraying' here? Apart from legions of potential future clients for whom you would be the sine qua non in their quest for freedom? xx

Ladies and gentlemen I present BoB's long suffering girlfriend (or is that the other way round). Unfortunately she does become a bit of a law widow at times, but I appreciate all the support she gives me.

Including the free grammar and spelling lessons as you can all see lol.

Unfortunately clients with housing problems or contentious probate issues aren't really at risk of having their liberty taken away, but it's always nice to be thought of as indispensable.

You are going to have to rename your Blog if you are compromising with a Linkies summer vac scheme! I thought that this was Bar or Bust, even if it means doing RTA's for the rest of your life, or repo actions for the loan consolidators who advertise on daytime TV!!

Probably good experience to see inside a law firm. There is potential for them being a bit cross if they find out that you never really intended to join. So you have to play it carefully. Not smart to p*** off a big law firm if you are set on a career at the bar!

On balance I'd say do it - as let's face it there is a chance that you may end up having to look beyond the bar and having done a vac scheme would help your case should you wish to try the City firms.

Good luck - hope you don't need to fall back on Links in the end

Cheers PP. Im still dead set on the the Bar, this is really more another chance to hopefully (I haven't actually heard back yet but it was only two days ago) add something more to my CV. I thought that some time in a big commercial law firm would be good experience, as I want to be a chancery practitioner, and most of the chancery sets now do commercial as well.

And as you said it's always to good to have a back up plan, but I will make sure that they don't know that. That is one reason that this blog is anonymous.

Can't fault your reasoning, BoB - just treat the placement (if you get it) as seriously as if you were dead set on joining the firm and make sure that you leave with everyone thinking that you are wonderful at the end of it. I am sure that you will do just that. It will give you a tiny insight of life in what you hope will become one of your clients.
